Greece’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s treatment of Greek citizens detained during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, calling it “unacceptable and absolutely condemnable.”
The ministry said Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis instructed officials to lodge a formal diplomatic protest with Israel and demanded the immediate release of Greek nationals involved.
“We demand full respect for international humanitarian law and human rights and call on the Israeli authorities to expedite all procedures and immediately release Greek citizens,” the statement said.
The flotilla, bound for Gaza, was intercepted by Israeli forces amid heightened tensions over humanitarian access to the enclave.
Video circulating from the port of Ashdod shows detained activists, some chanting “Free Palestine,” before being restrained.
