Follows surprise troop redeployment announcements by Washington
The US is set to inform allies by the end of the week how it plans to reduce the number of troops it can have ready for NATO as part of an update to the alliance’s global force model.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio — who confirmed he will attend Friday’s meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Sweden — is expected to make an initial announcement in the margins of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Sweden, before discussing it with the rest of the alliance, a source familiar with the matter told Euractiv.
The announcement follows recent troop redeployments that have raised questions about a gradual US withdrawal from Europe’s defence in order to focus on other theatres of operation.
