As many as 606 employees at professional networking platform LinkedIn were notified of permanent layoffs last week, according to a report by the New York Post, which cited a new Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report.The report said that the layoffs will take effect on July 13. The move followed an internal memo from LinkedIn CEO Daniel Shapero, who was appointed to the role in April. In the memo, Shapero said the company needed to "reinvent how we work" by creating more agile teams focused on key priorities. LinkedIn plans to redirect investments towards areas such as infrastructure to support its long-term goals and overall vision, the memo said.Shapero added that the company would reduce roles across marketing, engineering, product and other business functions.As per the memo, LinkedIn is also cutting spending on marketing campaigns, vendor costs, customer events and underutilised office space as part of the restructuring exercise.The largest number of layoffs came from LinkedIn’s Mountain View office in California, where 352 employees were affected. Another 66 remote employees based in the same city were also laid off. In addition, 108 workers in San Francisco, 59 in Sunnyvale and 21 in Carpinteria lost their jobs.The New York Post said there could be even more layoffs coming, as Reuters reported last week that the company plans to cut 5% of its workforce.The job cuts come despite LinkedIn recently reporting 12% year-on-year revenue growth in its third-quarter earnings. Meanwhile, LinkedIn’s parent company, Microsoft, recently announced buyouts that could affect 7% of its 125,000-person workforce, or roughly 8,750 employees.The layoffs add to a wider trend in the technology industry, as companies restructure operations and increase spending on AI infrastructure and automation tools.A similar restructuring is also underway at Meta, which also announced layoffs of around 8,000 employees on Wednesday. The company began informing affected employees across the world early in the morning, starting with staff in its Asian hub, Singapore, who received notifications at 4 a.m. local time.Meanwhile, Meta’s chief people officer, Janelle Gale, told employees that around 7,000 staff members would be reassigned to new AI-focused initiatives. At the same time, the company plans to cut several managerial positions as part of its team restructuring.Gale also said that heads of different departments would soon announce organisational changes across the company.
