A bride is seeking to divorce her husband just one day after they tied the knot, all because of one disrespectful and mortifying stunt he pulled during the reception12:03, 20 May 2026Your wedding day should be one of the happiest days of your life. For most couples, getting married is a big step in their relationship, and the wedding day should be a cause for celebration, when family and friends come together to watch the happy couple tie the knot and begin the rest of their lives together.Usually, you don't get married until you're very sure that your partner is the person you want to be with, and while things don't always go to plan and divorces do happen, there's normally a period of marital bliss first. But one woman has said that her marriage went south much faster than anyone was expecting - as she asked for a divorce the day after the wedding. The anonymous woman sent a message to Slate's Dear Prudence advice column, explaining that, while she was excited to marry her husband, she quickly changed her mind when he broke the only "hard rule" she had set for the day.She told her partner she didn't want to participate in the growing trend of brides and grooms rubbing cake into each other's faces at the reception. The bride expected him to respect her wishes, but was sorely mistaken. However, what he did at the reception instead left her horrified and humiliated - and she knew it was a sign that she shouldn't continue a relationship with him.Writing to the column, she said: "I never cared about getting married, but I wasn't opposed to it. So when my boyfriend proposed in 2020, we decided to go for it. We each took on about half the responsibility for organising the wedding, but I think I was pretty reasonable about compromise when he really wanted something. My only hard-and-fast rule was that he would not rub cake in my face at the reception."Being a reasonable man who knows me well, he didn't. Instead, he grabbed me by the back of the head and shoved my head down into it. It was planned since the cake was destroyed, and he had a bunch of cupcakes as backup."The bride immediately told her husband she was "done" with him and walked out of her own wedding. However, the wedding took place near Christmas, so her family encouraged her to wait to formally file for divorce or annulment until after the holidays were over. She added: "I left. The next day, I told him we were done. I am standing by that. The thing is that over the holidays, everyone has got together to tell me I should give him a second chance."They say I am overreacting because of my issues, because I am very claustrophobic after a car accident years ago, and I absolutely panicked at being shoved into a cake and held there."They also keep telling me I love him - even though right now I don’t feel that at all - and that he loves me, and that means not giving up at the first hurdle. I don’t want to, but everyone is so united and confident in their assurance that I am making a terrible mistake that I wonder if they are right."In response, the agony aunt told the bride to push on with the divorce, despite her family's pleas for her to call it off, because the groom's actions were a huge "red flag".The post was also later shared on Reddit, where people were equally stunned by the groom's actions and expressed their hope that the woman had gone through with her plans to dump him.One person wrote: "It's not even a cutesy splat of cake on the nose; he slammed her head into it and humiliated her."Article continues belowWhile another said: "He didn't just not respect her only boundary, he found the worst, most aggressive way possible to violate it."
