WASHINGTON — It’s a busy week for the Washington Nationals when James Wood hits an inside-the-park grand slam, and it gets buried because of a few roster transactions. These, however, were significant moves, headlined by the promotion of outfielder Dylan Crews and the demotion of third baseman Brady House to Triple-A Rochester. In corresponding moves, the team optioned outfielder Joey Wiemer to Rochester and promoted first baseman/designated hitter Andrés Chaparro to Washington. There’s a lot to unpack from these decisions. Throughout Tuesday morning and afternoon, I spoke to people in and around the organization about the decision to bring Crews back up. Feel free to check that out for an in-depth look at the process. But there’s more on the table. This Q&A focuses on the front office, lineup decisions, roster construction and the future.Questions have been edited for length and clarity. Spencer, what is Nats management saying they want Brady House to work on while at Rochester? Does Joey Wiemer even have a shot at coming back? — Michele S.House hit .354 with a .988 OPS against lefties, but just .174 with a .550 OPS against right-handed pitching. The Nationals don’t want to limit his at-bats (now or in the future) exclusively to the short side of a platoon, so they need him to learn how to hit righties in Rochester. The 22-year-old — and it’s worth mentioning his age, because president of baseball operations Paul Toboni did so several times — is an unfinished product. He is also so talented that, especially in the lower levels of the minor leagues, he could get away with an unrefined approach against right-handed pitching. In the major leagues, House was hammered with high velocity and pitches up in the zone. Toboni said his situational hitting could also use some work. Finally, the defense: Toboni said he believes House can be a Gold Glove player one day. But he has been playing somewhat passively in the field — or on the defensive, so to speak — and is at his best when he is aggressive. They almost want him to be cocky out there. As for Wiemer: If someone is injured, Wiemer could come back up. Additionally, if the club traded Jacob Young, or Young went on a cold stretch and needed to be sent down to Triple A, that would theoretically open a spot. As the front office told him, there’s just not a spot for him to get playing time right now. It’s not certain he could come back up, but I wouldn’t rule it out, either.Hi, Spencer. Any word on Jacob Young? — Joe D.Young’s imaging came back negative Monday, which was a great sign. He played in the ninth inning Tuesday, which is an even better sign. He’s back to about 90 percent — it’s truly just a contusion — and could be in the lineup as soon as Wednesday.
