FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Michael Penix Jr.’s plan hasn’t changed since he limped off the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Nov. 16 with a torn ACL that would end another season for the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.Be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season.“That’s always been the goal, but at the same time I have to focus on the right now and do everything I can to get better each and every day,” Penix said Tuesday after the Falcons finished their second OTA practice of the offseason.Penix has been throwing since March and participated in all of Atlanta’s individual drills and seven-on-seven work Tuesday.“I feel like myself,” he said. “I feel really good. … As long as nobody falls into my leg right now, I feel good. I feel I’m right where I need to be.”Head coach Kevin Stefanski was hesitant to put a timetable on Penix’s full return, but the 26-year-old won’t participate in any full team work during this portion of OTAs, and it’s unclear if he’ll be ready for that when training camp starts in July.“But that time is coming,” Stefanski said. “His main focus is getting healthy, and he’s doing that. As a staff and definitely for Mike, we kind of have the blinders on and are really just looking at what’s in front of us.”The Falcons brought six-year veteran Tua Tagovailoa in as a free agent to compete with Penix, and Tagovailoa was sharper in Tuesday’s work, completing 13 of 14 passes with one interception. Penix was 10-for-14 with one interception and one drop.Stefanski indicated before practice that his staff would be watching seven-on-seven work closely and expecting a lot from the offense because there is no pass rush in those drills. But he added that expectations for Penix will be tempered by his rehabilitation process. Tagovailoa and Penix will rotate working with the first- and second-team offenses, Stefanski said.“We’re really focused on making sure each quarterback gets the reps that they need for that given day so that they can, No. 1, learn our system, perform and command our system, and, No. 2, add to the evaluations.”
