A Canadian expat who has lived in the UK for seven years named for favourite beach in the country that is apparently "perfect for a day trip" and "cheesy in a fun way"09:37, 20 May 2026A Canadian expat who relocated to the UK seven years ago has revealed her favourite beach destination - and it's not in Devon, Cornwall or Wales.‌The debate over Britain's finest beaches never seems to die down, with those regions listed above often staking claim to the prize along with the likes of Bournemouth and Yorkshire.‌But one woman reckons she has the definitive answer. Maria Polansky uprooted her life from Canada seven years ago and has since explored the length and breadth of the country.‌She initially expected to spend most weekends in London, but was surprised to find herself increasingly drawn to other corners of Britain instead.Maria has declared Weston-super-Mare in Somerset as her ultimate favourite beach town. Writing in Business Insider, she said: "The sun setting on the beach in Weston-super-Mare, England," reports Somerset Live.‌"I think Weston-super-Mare is the perfect beach town for a day trip. If you're going to Bath, you might as well venture roughly an hour via train to experience an authentic beach town."Maria went on to describe the town as "cheesy in a fun way," boasting a bustling pier packed with food stalls and arcade games, alongside a sweeping coastal strip just waiting to be explored. She concludes: "Visiting Weston-super-Mare is a fun day trip that offers proper cultural immersion and a look at what the locals like to do for a staycation." Weston-super-Mare has been a beloved coastal destination for more than 200 years, evolving from a modest fishing village into a flourishing health resort during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.‌The pavilion on the Grand Pier was gutted by a devastating blaze in July 2008, before undergoing an extensive £39million reconstruction and reopening its doors in 2010.Maria also spoke fondly of Bath, which she described as a favourite destination for "glimpses of ancient architecture".‌She writes: "In my opinion, the architecture in Bath makes this city a must-see. This former Roman settlement is one of England's most picturesque destinations. It's named after the city's Roman baths, which can still be seen today."Although it's not advised to take a dip in the ancient baths because of the water quality, there are a number of spas in the city perfect for any swimming needs."In addition to the actual baths, I love strolling through the city to take in the ancient architecture. The city centre also has plenty of interesting specialty shops, cafés, and pubs to stop in along the way."Article continues belowThe town welcomes roughly four to five million visitors annually, with the overwhelming majority being day-trippers. The seaside resort traditionally attracts around 4.2 to 5.1 million day visitors each year, compared to approximately 175,000 to 246,000 guests who choose to stay overnight.
