Millions of new voters are about to be thrown into the turmoil of British politics – and it could have unpredictable consequences at the next general election.
The Representation of the People Bill, introduced to Parliament last month, will, for the first time, give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote, adding around 1.5 million young people to the electorate.
It will also introduce automatic voter registration, capturing an estimated seven million eligible adults currently missing from the electoral roll.
Together, the two measures represent the most significant expansion of the franchise in a generation – and the central question for all the main parties is whose side those new voters are on, and will it make any difference?
