MANILA, Philippines — The ongoing impeachment proceedings for Vice President Sara Duterte will not affect the preparations of the Commission on Elections for the 2028 elections, Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said on Wednesday.

While Garcia acknowledged that an impeachment process will always be political, he said that the Comelec does not want to be involved in it.

He added that the poll body has been preparing for the elections as early as this year.

“Comelec will accommodate all candidates for the 2028 elections. we will accept any candidacies for the If there are grounds to disqualify any of them, then we will resolve those grounds. This is where we will show Comelec’s impartiality,” Garcia said, partly in Filipino.
