Somalia’s Federal Government has begun a disputed one year mandate extension, pushing elections back to 2027, as its international donors try to avert a constitutional and political crisis.
The President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud administration’s term ended on May 15, 2026 and the extension has triggered protests from opposition groups and regional states.
Donors have voiced concerns that the clash over constitutional amendments could heighten political tensions in a country already beset by violence.
