U.S. President Donald Trump is moving to admit 10,000 additional white South Africans into the United States under a special refugee program that has become one of the most controversial parts of his immigration policy.

According to documents obtained by The New York Times, the Trump administration has proposed increasing the U.S. refugee admissions cap from 7,500 to 17,500, with the extra slots largely reserved for Afrikaners, a white minority group in South Africa mainly descended from Dutch settlers.

The proposal, submitted to Congress on Monday, estimates the expansion will cost about $100 million.

The move stands out because the broader U.S. refugee program remains heavily restricted for applicants from most other countries, including war-affected nations across Africa and the Middle East.

The Trump administration argues that white South Africans face growing racial discrimination and security threats, creating what it described as an “emergency refugee situation.”
