Facebook parent Meta has launched a legal challenge in London’s High Court to the structure of fees and potential financial penalties put in place by Ofcom around the Online Safety Act.

Ofcom’s enforcement of the law, beginning this year, is funded through fees imposed on the companies regulated, including Meta, with the fees calculated based on a proportion of the company’s qualifying worldwide revenue.

The fee schedule, which was introduced last September and took effect in March, applies to companies that host user-generated content, search content and pornography, and whose turnover from such services is about £250 million or more.
