Use of AI tools without the right strategy can lead to increased burnout and loss of key talent, putting productivity gains at risk, a study has found.
The recent study from Boston Consulting Group surveying 1,488 US-based workers found that when staff used up to three AI tools, their productivity increased, but with the use of four or more, self-reported productivity declined.
Increased levels of AI oversight – tasks such as reviewing and correcting AI-produced materials – was associated with 12 percent greater mental fatigue, 19 percent greater information overload, and could lead to what BCG termed “brain fry”, with many respondents reporting a mental “fog” or “buzzing” that required them to physically step away from their computers to recover.
