Parliament and national governments remain split over a range of politically sensitive issues
Officials, diplomats, and MEPs reconvene in Strasbourg on Wednesday for what is expected to be the final round of talks on the proposed returns regulation, a contentious overhaul of EU deportation rules.
Presented by its supporters as the missing pillar of the EU’s migration pact, the legislation will allow governments to transfer rejected asylum seekers and irregular migrants, including families with children, to so-called ‘return hubs’ facilities outside the EU before deportation.
Divisions remain, and before a final deal can be struck, the negotiators will need to find a way to compromise on some of the most politically sensitive areas of the regulation.
