Sony wasn’t going to let the 1000X’s aluminum anniversary pass without a celebration.
The Japanese electronics giant just unveiled the latest evolution of its flagship headphones, the 1000X the Collexion. The newest member of the 1000X family features a refined look, more premium materials, and an improved soundstage, upgrades that make what was already one of the best pairs of over-ears on the market even better.
The 1000X line, which debuted with the MDR-1000X in 2016, has become a fixture of our annual Audio Awards list, but the new version well and truly takes things to another level. The headphones, which are available in Black and Platinum at launch, have been treated to a luxury makeover and now feature a hand-polished metal headband with a vegan leather cushion to meant to ensure a more secure fit. The sensibly sized ear cups are covered in the same material to give them a more tactile feel and feature pillowy ear pads (that are replaceable), integrated metal buttons and microphone openings. The headphones didn’t feel noticeably heavier than their predecessor during our extended test run and were less prone to fingerprints and smudges. Adding an integrated handle to the included carrying case is another nice design touch.
