Lionsgate is developing a live stage adaptation of The Housemaid.
Bekah Brunstetter, who adapted The Notebook into a Broadway musical, will write the stage treatment of the psychological thriller, with Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska (Life of Pi, Paranormal Activity) producing. The play will be based on both the film, released in December 2025, as well as the 2022 novel, written by Freida McFadden.
The story follows a young woman, Millie Calloway (portrayed in the film by Sydney Sweeney) as she becomes a live-in maid for a wealthy family (Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar), who have a dark secret. Paul Feig directed the film, which was a Hidden Pictures / Pretty Dangerous Pictures production, with a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshin.
A production timeline for the stage adaptation has not yet been announced.
This is the latest expansion of The Housemaid franchise, after Lionsgate announced a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, based on the next book in the trilogy. The film is expected to be released Dec. 17, 2027.
