CNN anchor Abby Phillip is making room for one more. The "NewsNight" host revealed in a May 18 social media post that she and her husband are expecting their second child, a boy, following fertility treatments."Here he comes!" Phillip wrote. "We are so excited to announce that Baby boy Richardson will be joining our family soon. Marcus, Naomi and I cannot wait to be a family of four."Phillip credited in vitro fertilization (IVF) in her post, writing that her second pregnancy, like "so many families," was possible because of the medical procedure."Throughout this process, I’ve really learned the power of trusting in God’s timing. It can be so hard when so want something so much — but you want it on your schedule," she said. "Yet, everything happens for a reason. And I’m grateful that God chose this moment to answer our prayers."According to People, Phillip's "little boy" is joining the family later this year, in October. She said her 4-year-old daughter Naomi is "already preparing to be an excellent big sister.""Every chapter in this motherhood journey has taught me that I can do so much more than I ever imagined— this one is no exception. 💙" Phillip added. What is IVF?In vitro fertilization is a medical procedure that can be used to address several infertility struggles.According to Yale Medicine, eggs and sperm are combined in a lab dish before the fertilized eggs are transferred into the uterus. The process of IVF usually begins with patients taking medication to stimulate ovarian follicle growth, gynecologist Karen Tang, M.D., previously told USA TODAY.Doctors then conduct a procedure to retrieve those eggs, during which they put the patient under anesthesia and use a long, thin needle that's inserted through the vagina.Following the procedure, medical professionals will fertilize the eggs with sperm. Then the "resulting embryos are grown and evaluated for appearance and quality" before transferring them to the uterus, Tang said. How much is IVF?According to data from FertilityIQ, an educational platform for individuals and couples navigating infertility and family building, the average cost of IVF treatment and medication is more than $20,000.President Donald Trump, who has said numerous times that he wants couples to have more babies, has introduced several plans to make IVF more affordable, including seeking to reduce costs for employers and their workers who are looking for more affordable options for the procedure. This month, Trump announced a proposed rule that would allow employers to provide standalone health insurance coverage for fertility benefits, essentially creating a supplemental insurance option, similar to vision or dental insurance, according to PBS News.Trump has maintained his desire to make IVF affordable, dating back to his signing of an executive order in February 2025 to expand "access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) for Americans.""President Trump promised to advance IVF and help American families with the associated costs so American families can have more babies," according to the White House's news release at the time.Contributing: Hannah Yasharoff, USA TODAY
