A man born in Germany to a Vietnamese father is seeking clarification on whether people of mixed Vietnamese heritage raised overseas like him are eligible for Vietnamese citizenship.

Reader Lukas Minh Tran:

I am 28 years old and was born and raised in Germany. My father is Vietnamese who had moved to Germany for work in 1995, while my mother is German.

My birth was registered under German law and not with any Vietnamese diplomatic mission. I have held only German citizenship throughout my life.

After visiting Vietnam last year and traveling across the country, I decided that I would like to live and work there in the future. I am also considering applying for Vietnamese citizenship to make long-term residence and employment more convenient.
