There is no macroeconomic or geopolitical event driving the pullback in gold prices this week, according to the Swiss bank UBS.
Gold edged higher on Tuesday morning, but the metal remained on course to notch its biggest monthly decline in almost 17 years.
The moves come at the end of a blockbuster year of annual gains for the precious metals.
