Dak Prescott doesn’t seem to have the same concerns that some Dallas Cowboys fans do when it comes to George Pickens’ contract situation.Although Pickens has not been attending voluntary workouts at The Star over the last two weeks like many of his teammates, the star wide receiver has worked with Prescott on his own.“I’ve just showed George my support,” Prescott said last Thursday at the team’s annual Reliant Home Run Derby. “The guy that I know George is, obviously he signed the (franchise) tag, so when he has to be there and ready to play, he’s going to be there. He’s a hell of a talent. We’ve thrown this offseason, so I’m comfortable with where he’s at and I’m excited for when he can get in the building and get rolling.”Thursday was the first opportunity for the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback to share his thoughts on the team’s roster with free agency and the draft completed.Dallas could still make a notable move or two before the start of the regular season, but the majority of the roster is now in place.“My expectations right now are just to grow every day, grow this brotherhood, obviously build off what we did last year,” Prescott said. “We’ve had a lot of changes on the defense, so allow those guys to create their identity, support them in getting to know each other, creating their culture and who they want to be. At the same time, keeping the team culture, making sure we’re connecting across the ball.“I’m super excited just about the first couple of weeks (of the offseason program). Having some of the vets coming in, Rashan Gary, Quinnen (Williams), Kenny (Clark). I’m really, really excited for them. Getting the young guys that we did (on defense), they have great vets to look up to. And we’re going to look to build things on their side of the ball and get better. Things are looking great.”The Cowboys finished last season ranked second in total offense (392 yards per game) and seventh in scoring offense (27.7 points per game). Almost the entire offensive roster and coaching staff remains in place. There’s clear excitement about what they can be in Brian Schottenheimer’s second season as head coach and offensive play caller. But there is one key area they’ve been working to improve on this offseason. The 2025 Cowboys only scored touchdowns on 57 percent of their trips into the red zone. That ranked them middle of the pack at 16th overall. They would like to get back to 2022 when they had the NFL’s best red zone offense, scoring touchdowns just over 71 percent of the time.“(The offense) was good (last year),” Prescott said. “It was great, there was a lot of goodness in it. But you go and self-scout and you break down different things and we weren’t a good red zone team. I’m not saying we were the worst, but we weren’t near to our standard. And in some areas we damn near were the worst and nobody is OK with that, nobody is complacent, nobody wants average. We don’t want to be good, we want to be great. … Last year was Year 1 under Schotty. It’s up to us to make sure we take a step and a big step.”There’s plenty of room for Dallas to improve defensively. The coaching staff has been completely overhauled with the hiring of new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. The personnel has greatly changed with the most notable additions being Gary at edge rusher, safety Jalen Thompson, cornerback Cobie Durant, linebacker Dee Winters, safety P.J. Locke, defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard and top draft picks Caleb Downs, Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham.Cowboys inside linebacker DeMarvion Overshown has struggled to stay healthy during his first three years in the league. But he’s healthy now and excited about the defensive changes.“It’s been fun,” he said. “You’re excited for football already when you’re in the meeting room, and you’re going through certain stuff on the field, and you see the scheme actually playing out in real time, and just knowing, this is what’s going to help us win the Super Bowl. How (Parker) explains the calls, how he goes in depth on the reasons why we’re doing everything, one through 11 on the field, why we’re doing this to better the team, why we’re doing this to better our chances to force a fumble or force a three-and-out.“(Parker) comes to work, ready to work every day. He’s quizzing us in the room, making sure we’re ready and stuff like that. That’s the type of leadership we need. I’m very excited.”Prescott expressed his optimism over the team’s new additions in free agency and the draft during the Cowboys’ annual Reliant Home Run Derby. (Jon Machota / The Athletic)Overshown says he believes the changes being made, which includes switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 base defense, will allow him to be at his best.“I’m not just parked somewhere expecting to make a play on the other side of the field,” he said. “There’s some stuff schemed up for me and some stuff where I’m supposed to be in the fits every play. I’m excited about that. I love football and I love being involved in the play, so I’m excited for the role I got.”Although he’s a rookie, Downs is expected to make an immediate impact. The 11th overall pick in last month’s draft will likely see time at nickel cornerback and safety, being in position to make plays at all three levels. It’s only been a couple of weeks around his new teammates, but the former Ohio State and Alabama standout has already made an impression.“Spending a little bit of time already around Caleb, I love the way that he’s wired,” Prescott said. “I’m excited for him. He’s got some great vets, whether it be myself to ask questions to, or great vets on that defensive side to help make sure that he gets off to a great start.”A healthy Overshown and Downs could be two of the defense’s biggest playmakers, something that was clearly missing last season.“He’s a worker, for sure,” Overshown said of Downs. “He wants to get better every day. His film speaks for itself. He just wants to help do whatever to help make the team better. That’s one of the conversations we had while we were working out. He’s here to help us win. He’s here to ball out. I’m excited. You have those types of players on your team, you always have a chance on Sundays.”
