The head of Greece’s intelligence agency EYP, Themistoklis Demiris, and Supreme Court Prosecutor Konstantinos Tzavellas, have been summoned to a hearing at the Parliament’s Institutions and Transparency Committee on May 20, over the wiretapping scandal.
The summons came after the opposition parties submitted requests.
Demiris’ hearing is planned for 9 a.m. behind closed doors, citing security concerns, and will be attended by the Minister of State, Akis Skertsos. Tzavellas will appear at 1 p.m.
The topic of the hearing of the top court prosecutor relates to “operational issues of justice with the aim of enhancing transparency.”
Earlier this month, Tzavellas declined a request by a lower Athens court to investigate charges including espionage and illegal distribution of surveillance software. The single-judge court had earlier convicted four businessmen linked to an Israeli spyware vendor, sentencing them to a combined 126 years and eight months. Investigations into alleged perjury continue at the lower prosecutor level.
