The Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for planning and implementing all government plans, programs, initiatives, and activities related to energy exploration, development, consumption, distribution, and conservation.

The DOE points to the Petroleum Board, created in 1972, as its predecessor. It was later reorganized as a department under the Marcos Cabinet in 1977. It was downgraded to an office in 1987, then became a department again in 1992 through Republic Act 7638.

The department is led by the Secretary of Energy, who is appointed by the President and confirmed by Congress through the Commission on Appointments.
