Guwahati: Around 10 people in Manipur remain untraceable, even as 28 of the 38 people taken captive were released on Friday.A senior police officer, requesting anonymity, said, "Security forces, along with civil society organisations, are actively engaged and will ensure the release of the remaining people."The Manipur government said on Friday that an "unfortunate incident" took place at Zero Point between Kotlen and Kotzim Inter-Village Road in Kangpokpi district on May 13, when unknown armed miscreants ambushed civilian vehicles, killing three civilians and injuring four others. A case has been registered and search operations were immediately launched in nearby areas and villages.The statement added that in the aftermath of the incident, several civilians belonging to different communities were detained near Leilon Vaiphei and Saparmeina villages in Kangpokpi district and parts of Senapati district."The Government sprang into action. Public leaders and all security forces made concerted efforts to trace these persons and secure their release. As a result of the joint efforts of the administration, security forces, public leaders and civil society organisations, 28 detained civilians belonging to different communities have been safely released," the statement said.It added that efforts were continuing to secure the release of the remaining people and appealed to the public to cooperate with the administration and security forces in maintaining peace.The people taken captive belong to both the Naga and Kuki communities and were detained in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts.Meanwhile, the Kuki Students' Organisation Sadar Hills announced a 48-hour shutdown across Kangpokpi district from midnight of May 15, extending support to the shutdown call given by Kuki Inpi Manipur over the continued detention of 14 Kuki civilians. The organisations have alleged that several members of their community remain in detention.
