The Israeli military has announced the killing of Hamas’ most senior military commander in Gaza, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, during a strike on Gaza City despite an ongoing US-brokered ceasefire.
In a joint statement issued by the Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli Security Agency, Israeli authorities said al-Haddad was killed in what they described as a “precise strike” carried out on Friday.
The strikes reportedly hit Gaza City’s al-Rimal neighbourhood, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 50 others, according to emergency officials in Gaza.
Medical authorities at Al-Shifa Hospital said the dead included three women and a child.
The Israeli government accused al-Haddad of being one of the masterminds behind the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and alleged that he played a key role in holding hostages captured during the assault.
