Correctional Services Minister Piet Groenewald and department head Samuel Thobakgale officiated at a ceremony for long service award and an unveiled the insignia ranks at the Kgoši Mampuru Correctional Facility in February.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has rejected the plans by the Department of Correctional Services to re-introduce insignia ranks within the top brass of its management.

This after Minister Piet Groenewald announced the planned initiative when he tabled the department budget for the 2026/27 financial year.

Groenewald said in his budget speech the new insignia for members of the senior management service reflected both leadership authority and its integral role within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security cluster.

“New insignia for officials at levels 2-12 in the Correctional Services Occupational Specific Dispensation has been approved and will be rolled out,” he said.
