Many districts in Karnataka, including the coastal, south interior, and North Interior regions are set to receive rainfall from Saturday, May 16, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. According to the IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area continues to persist over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and tilts southwestward with height.Bengaluru is also on the list and the city may witness moderate to heavy showers today, as per the IMD forecast. According to News9, A few areas in the city may witness light rain, especially during late afternoon or night and the chances of rain may decrease by Sunday.The IMD has issued both orange and yellow alerts for many districts in Karnataka and has warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across parts of the state over the coming days. Heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is likely at isolated places across several districts. A heavy rain alert in Karnataka has been issued suggesting rainfall intensity may increase over the weekend, prompting authorities to monitor vulnerable regions.According to the latest update from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind with speed 40-50 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over NIK till May 17, 2026. A yellow alert has been issued in Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad, Bellary, Haveri, Vijayanagar, Shimoga, Davangere, Chitradurga, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru Hassan, Kodagu, Tumkur, Mandya,Mysore, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, Kolar, Bangalore Urban, Chikkaballapur, Bangalore Rural districts.Karnataka districts on alertThe IMD forecast said that there will be heavy rain and thundershowers with gusty wind (40 to 50 kmph) at one or two places over Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar districts. Ballari, Vijayanagara, Davangere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Mandya, Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chickballapur and Kolar districts are likely to receive light to moderate rain/thundershowers with gusty wind (40 to 50 kmph).In north interior Karnataka, there would be light to moderate rain and thundershowers with gusty wind (40 to 50 kmph) at one or two places over Raichur, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Gadag, Koppal, Bagalkot districts. It added that dry weather is likely in the remaining districts. There would be light to moderate rain at one or two places over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts till May 21.Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 40–50 kmph are likely to affect North Interior Karnataka until May 17. Although wind speeds are expected to ease on May 18, thunderstorms may still occur in parts of the region. Along with North Interior Karnataka, several areas of South Interior Karnataka are also expected to witness thunderstorms with winds reaching 40–50 kmph during this period.Four of family killed in roof collapse in KarnatakaFour members of a family were killed after the roof of an old rented house collapsed during heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in this district, police said on Friday. The incident occurred at Moratagi village of Alamela taluk in Vijayapura district, police said. According to police, the family had been staying in the old rented house while repair work was underway at their own residence. The incident occurred on Thursday night when the roof of the house collapsed due to the heavy rain and wind. All four members of the family were asleep when the roof of the house suddenly collapsed on them, following which they got trapped under the debris and died on the spot, an official told PTI.
