According to Boudol, she had originally gone to the shelter to look for a pet for her mother but later decided to take Lazare home herself.

Lazare, a French toy spaniel believed by carers to possibly be the world’s oldest dog, has died aged 30, his owner said on Friday.

The Papillon dwarf spaniel died on Thursday, only weeks after being adopted from an animal shelter by 29-year-old Ophelie Boudol in the southeastern French town of Villy-le-Pelloux.

Animal charity worker Anne-Sophie Moyon said Lazare was born on December 4, 1995, and had spent most of his life with the same owner before ending up at a shelter following her death.

According to Boudol, she had originally gone to the shelter to look for a pet for her mother but later decided to take Lazare home herself.
