President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigerians who refuse to pay taxes without lawful exemption should not be regarded as citizens, insisting that taxation remains the foundation for national development despite widespread resistance to it.

Speaking on Friday at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, Tinubu said although many citizens dislike paying taxes, they still expect government to provide roads, hospitals, infrastructure and social services.

“A citizen who pays taxes is a citizen, whether corporate or individual. If you are not a taxpayer and not exempted, then you are not a citizen,” the President said.

Tinubu acknowledged that taxation is often unpopular across all classes of society but argued that governments cannot function effectively without revenue generated through taxes.
