JioStar has accused Zee Entertainment Enterprises of illegally broadcasting 12 copyrighted Bollywood films multiple times without authorisation, escalating the ongoing legal battle between the two broadcasters into a tit-for-tat copyright dispute.
The allegations come barely 10 days after Zee secured interim relief from the court in a separate copyright infringement case against JioStar. In an order issued on May 5, the court had directed JioStar to refrain within 15 days from using, publishing, broadcasting, streaming, uploading or copying any of Zee’s licensed works after Zee alleged repeated unauthorised use of its content despite several warnings and communications.
Sources called the move a ‘tit-for-tat’ move as Jio reportedly alleged that Zee engaged in the unauthorised broadcast of its copyrighted films multiple times.
Arbitration case
This is not the first round of bout between the two companies. The two companies are engaged in an arbitration case since 2024 in London over broadcasting rights of International Cricket Council (ICC) men’s and Under-19 events where Jio claimed damages worth $1 billion. While this case continues, experts say that the London case is more likely to meet a legal resolution than the ones in India.
