More than 1.5 million people live in long-term care facilities in the United States, up 8% from 2010, according to 2020 Census data. As the senior population grows, the need for care will grow, too. A Brookings Metro analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data estimates that the nation’s 80-plus population will double from 14.7 million in 2025 to 29.4 million in 2045.

Of course, long-term care isn't exclusive to seniors. Many other people with care needs, from children to young adults and beyond, live in group homes in the United States.
