The White House has announced that Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, during their meeting in Beijing, reached an agreement on the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and preventing any disruption to the global flow of energy.
In a statement released by the White House, both parties emphasized that the Strait must remain open to support the “free flow of energy.” Furthermore, Xi Jinping voiced China’s opposition to the “militarization of the Strait of Hormuz” and any attempts to impose tolls on vessels transiting this strategic waterway.
According to the statement, the Chinese president also expressed Beijing’s interest in increasing purchases of American oil to reduce China’s future dependence on the Strait of Hormuz route. This joint stance comes as tensions in the Persian Gulf and threats related to maritime traffic in the Strait have escalated in recent weeks, sparking serious concerns regarding global energy security.
The White House also stated that Trump and Xi discussed expanding economic cooperation, increasing mutual investment, and combating the trafficking of fentanyl precursors. Both leaders reaffirmed that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.
