The commission described the recurring bombings of civilian-populated areas as disturbing and inconsistent with both constitutional protections and international humanitarian law obligations.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded explanations from the Nigerian Air Force over repeated civilian casualties linked to military airstrikes in parts of the country, warning that the incidents raise serious human rights concerns.

The commission described the recurring bombings of civilian-populated areas as disturbing and inconsistent with both constitutional protections and international humanitarian law obligations.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Tony Ojukwu, said while the fight against insurgency and banditry remained a legitimate duty of the Nigerian state, military operations must still comply with legal and human rights standards.

Ojukwu expressed concern over repeated reports of civilian deaths and injuries, including women and children, during aerial bombardments carried out in conflict-hit communities.
