Once again, the Trump administration has declared war on Jimmy Kimmel—but this time, the crosshairs aren’t trained on the late-night host alone. On Tuesday, Semafor reported that the Federal Communications Commission would conduct an early review of ABC’s broadcast licenses to reevaluate whether the Disney-owned network should retain the privilege of hosting local-affiliate channels on publicly owned airwaves. In an official order dispatched to eight ABC stations across major cities like New York and Los Angeles, the FCC referred to this move as an important step in its ongoing, yearlong investigation of Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices (many of which were rolled back before FCC Chair Brendan Carr initiated the probe). Instead of waiting until 2028, as per the original station contracts, ABC will now have to submit its license renewal requests to the FCC by the end of next month, a sudden—and unprecedented—hastening of the timeline that the federal agency has determined is pertinent to the public interest.
