Angela Rayner sparked rumours of a potential bid for No10 by revealing she was cleared of any deliberate wrongdoing by the HMRC over her tax affairs.

Yesterday Wes Streeting sparked fury after he reportedly told allies he is preparing to resign from the government and trigger a contest as soon as today.

The Health Secretary is widely tipped to be on the brink of a leadership challenge as Keir Starmer's allies rally around the PM. One backbencher - a critic of Starmer - said the PM had been warned for years that Mr Streeting and the Labour right would eventually move against him.

He said: “Wes has no choice but to go for it. This is the raison d’être of his adult life....Only problem is he probably imagined this moment arriving in a Blairite sunlit upland, not the post-Mandelson wasteland with the right of the party staggering around like extras from a political Mad Max remake."

Dozens of MPs have called for Starmer to step down and four Government ministers, including Jess Phillips, have quit and urged him to go.
