A symbolic action in Sofia temporarily renamed “Journalist” Square to “Censored” Square as part of a protest highlighting pressure on media freedom and the growing use of legal intimidation against reporters.

The initiative was described by Ivan Radev from the Association of European Journalists, speaking to Bulgarian National Radio, as an attempt to draw attention to censorship and the silencing of critical voices in journalism.

“We chose through this symbolic action - we quietly changed the name of ‘Journalist’ Square for a while through various stickers, to give a sign that this cannot continue - that journalism needs protection,” Radev said.

Organizers said the action is aimed at so-called “SLAPP” cases, lawsuits often brought by individuals or entities with financial or political influence against journalists and media outlets. According to Radev, these cases create a significant imbalance between those filing the claims and the journalists defending themselves.

He also pointed to the existence of the “Censored” fund, established to help cover legal costs for journalists and media organizations targeted by such lawsuits. The fund has already supported more than 10 cases, financed through public donations, while dozens of similar proceedings are currently ongoing.
