By Malay Mail Thursday, 14 May 2026 6:44 PM MYT KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has dismissed speculation about an early 16th General Election (GE16) this year, saying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given no such indication.Fahmi, who also serves as the unity government's spokesman, said the PM’s priority remains squarely on addressing the public's problems and implementing reforms, The Star reported.“There is no indication from the prime minister, but he has reminded leaders and members of parliament to always be prepared for any possibility,” Fahmi was quoted saying after an event here today. He cited the potential for state elections, such as in Johor, as an example of why readiness is crucial. “While we know Johor may face elections, perhaps not now, it is not impossible in the not-too-distant future,” he noted.“The focus of leaders, especially those serving in the Cabinet, is to ensure that our plans to bring about change and reform can be implemented as effectively as possible,” he added.Looking ahead, Fahmi highlighted the significance of the unity government's national convention in Johor this weekend, stating it is expected to set the electoral tone for the coalition. He said Anwar, as the coalition chairman, is expected to outline a clear direction that will address speculation about early state polls in Johor and Melaka. This directive, he explained, will subsequently guide the election machinery on preparations and seat negotiations at both the state and national levels.GE16 must be held no later than February 2028, if Parliament is not dismissed before its automatic dissolution in December 2027.
