CINCINNATI — For the Cincinnati Reds right now, even a double can seem like bad news.Spencer Steer’s apparent score-tying home run in the 10th inning of Wednesday’s 8-7 loss to the Washington Nationals was ruled a ground-rule double on fan interference. A run still scored on the play, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 10th-inning home run by Nationals outfielder Daylen Lile off Reds reliever Tony Santillan. With one out in the 10th, Steer ripped lefty PJ Poulin’s sweeper to the top of the wall in left field at Great American Ball Park, where a fan reached over and caught the ball in his glove. It was ruled fan interference on the field, and then the play was upheld upon review.“We’ll never know, but it looked like they probably got it right,” Reds manager Terry Francona said. “They did everything (they could.) They went and looked. It would’ve been hard to overturn that, in my opinion. I wish they would’ve, but it would’ve been hard.”Steer said he was digging for second base and didn’t see the play unfold.
The Reds scored five runs in the first inning, culminating in a Tyler Stephenson grand slam, but starter Nick Lodolo gave up four runs in the second inning.
