The fan’s condition was unknown as of Thursday morning as officials have not released any additional information.“Yesterday’s game was delayed in the fourth inning to allow White Sox personnel to treat a fan who had fallen into the visiting team’s bullpen. The fan was transported to a local hospital for additional treatment,” the White Sox said in a statement. The incident happened in the bottom of the third inning at Rate Field when the fan tumbled over a railing above the Kansas City Royals bullpen. According to the Kansas City Star, the short railing is at least 10 feet above the bullpen, and the man fell while celebrating a White Sox run scored on a sacrifice fly from Chase Meidroth. The Star’s report also said another person tried to grab the fan by the legs as he fell, the fan did not land on his head, and the fan was breathing as paramedics tended to him.
The game was briefly delayed after stadium officials alerted umpires that the fan was receiving treatment, but resumed shortly after. The fan was removed from the bullpen on a stretcher after receiving assistance from medical personnel. The White Sox later announced during the game that the fan was transported to a local hospital.“We were talking with the security guard down in the bullpen at the time, and he said that by the time he (the fan) got to the hospital, he was in much better condition,” Royals reliever Nick Mears told reporters after the game, which the White Sox went on to win 6-5.The incident comes just over a year after a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, Kavan Markwood, fell more than 20 feet from the right field stands onto the field at PNC Park and suffered critical injuries. Markwood, who fell from a section of the stands with a rail above the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field, suffered a broken neck, clavicle and back.
