The European Parliament’s lead negotiator, Bernd Lange, said the final round of talks on the EU-US trade pact will take place on 19 May, resisting pressure from the centre-right EPP to fast-track negotiations.
EU negotiators failed to conclude this week a Brussels proposal that would eliminate tariffs on industrial and agricultural goods in exchange for a flat 15% US tariff on most EU exports.
“Recent developments confirm that we were right to resist the American threats,” he said in a statement on Friday, adding that European legislation “must not be dictated by menacing social media posts from the US.”
