Former President Barack Obama took some subtle shots at President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal, in a Wednesday night interview with “Late Night” host Stephen Colbert. During the interview, Obama touted the fact that his administration was able to curtail Iran’s nuclear program without taking any military action. Obama also suggested Trump didn’t fully understand the deal and only pulled out of it because he had negotiated it. “There’s no dispute that it worked, and we didn’t have to kill a whole bunch of people or shut down the Strait of Hormuz,” Obama said. Seemingly playing devil’s advocate, Colbert reminded Obama that some people — including the current president — say the nuclear deal didn’t work.“It’s not clear that he (Trump) didn’t believe that it didn’t work. He just said it didn’t work,” Obama said. “Worst, worst deal of all time,” Colbert said, quoting Trump’s rhetoric on the issue. “Yeah, because I did it, which is fine. That seems to be a pattern,” Obama said. Trump has repeatedly attacked the merits of the deal, often without presenting any evidence that the plan did not prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. As previously reported by HuffPost, any deal Trump manages to strike with Iran may be rather similar to the one Obama made, a fact the current president will likely never admit.Watch Obama’s full conversation with Colbert on the Iran nuclear deal here: The NewsCan't Wait.Neither Can We.Your SupportFuelsOur MissionYour SupportFuelsOur MissionSupport HuffPostMisinformation spreads fast.
