Posters displaying messages such as “Sudhir, Sudhar Lao”, “Equal Fee, Equal Rooms”, apart from other slogans mocking Vice-Chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy, were pasted across the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) campus on Thursday, a day after students staged multiple protests over water shortage, power cuts, and overcrowded women hostel facilities. On Thursday, around 60 students marched near the Vice-Chancellor’s office between 10.50 a.m. and 11.10 a.m., demanding that the administration issue a statement within 24 hours, students told The Hindu. The agitation followed Wednesday’s protests, when students gathered around 1.30 p.m. and marched to the faculty canteen and later to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, demanding that he meet them. According to students, following the protest, the Vice-Chancellor initially agreed to meet 40 female students in a closed setting, but student representatives objected and instead sought an open meeting for all female students. “The V-C then agreed to hold the interaction in a lecture room that could accommodate around 70 people, but we refused and remained seated at the amphitheatre, asking him to address us there. He later agreed to meet us at 3 p.m.,” a student said. When the Vice-Chancellor arrived, he said he would not respond to any questions and was only “there to listen”. According to students, when pressed to give a timeline for an official response, the Vice-Chancellor said it would take seven to 10 days. This was opposed by students, who pointed out that hostel preference forms close on May 17 and that the issues raised, particularly around hostel swapping, were not new. On Wednesday night, students sent an email to the administration demanding a response within 24 hours. The university was not available for comment even on Thursday.
