Motorists are seeking a traffic signal or a roundabout at Derik Junction in Nagercoil, as vehicles crossing the area from three directions often lead to traffic congestion during peak hours.

The junction connects roads leading to Parvathipuram, the Collectorate and Asaripallam. In the absence of traffic management infrastructure at the junction, motorists and pedestrians are forced to exercise extra caution while crossing the stretch.

Florence, a commuter from Christu Nagar, said that the junction is a busy intersection and lack of any traffic management system has made it difficult for pedestrians to cross it. She added that several staff members from Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital in Asaripallam, teachers and students are forced to cross without any traffic assistance, despite heavy vehicular movement during peak hours.

On many occasions, people new to the city and tourists travelling bound towards Thiruvananthapuram fail to notice the intersection, resulting in them crossing the junction at high speed.

Balan, an autorickshaw driver said that as the city continues to develop and expand, increase in vehicular movement has come at a cost. He emphasised that authorities must take note of the growing traffic and install proper traffic regulatory structure to prevent untoward accidents.
