Ahead of the upcoming release of Google Home Speaker, a new “Google Home Display” has appeared in Google app code, suggesting a new Nest Hub-esque device is in the works.
Google’s list of smart displays is very short. The original Google Home Hub launched in 2018 before later being rebranded as the Nest Hub, with a Nest Hub Max launching in 2019 with a bigger display, built-in Nest Cam, and better speakers. In 2021, the Nest Hub (2nd-gen) was released and, in the time since, it’s been silence as far as smart displays are concerned.
The pivot to Gemini as Google’s home assistant has also brought back hardware, with the “Google Home Speaker” having been announced last year with plans for a “Spring 2026” launch. In other words, any time now.
Obviously, Google was asked about a potential return to smart displays, with Google Home chief Anish Kattukaran explaining in October that the smart display is “the ultimate form factor to be able to deliver a really great home experience,” but without confirming any plans for an actual release.
It seems like things are indeed brewing behind the scenes.
