Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered the creation of a committee to study the country's electricity pricing structure, aiming to ensure fairness for consumers.According to government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek, the committee is to be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt and is expected to address structural issues related to electricity prices, particularly the cost components arising from power purchase agreements with private electricity producers.

Key elements include the availability payment, which is made to ensure that power plants are ready to operate even if they have not yet generated electricity, and the energy payment, a payment for electricity actually generated and supplied to the system based on the actual amount produced.

These issues have become major concerns among the public and private sectors as electricity prices rise.

According to Ms Rachada, the government understands that electricity costs are a significant burden for households and businesses.

Easing that burden requires a comprehensive approach rather than short-term measures because the electricity system involves energy security, long-term investment and investor confidence, she said.
