Corporate raider Gary Weiss will become interim chairman at takeover target Webjet just weeks after forcing his way onto the board, in a move that appears to advance his bid to wrest control of the company.

The online travel agent said chairman Don Clarke would retire two years after overseeing Webjet’s demerger from hotel room aggregator Web Travel Group. Clarke had been a non-executive director of the combined entity since 2008.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that CEO Katrina Barry stepped down in March. In March, she announced her intention to step down at a future date but currently remains in the role.
