The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has authorised its State president, Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, to take the next course of action amid continuing uncertainty over the Congress’s delay in naming Kerala’s next Chief Minister.
A meeting of the IUML leadership held at Mr. Thangal’s residence at Panakkad near Malappuram on Wednesday morning (May 13, 2026) reviewed the evolving political situation as the Congress high command remained undecided on the Chief Ministerial choice.
Kerala Assembly elections: Why IUML’s influence underscores its key role in UDF leadership choices, coalition stability
According to party sources, several leaders voiced frustration and disappointment over the prolonged delay despite the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) securing a decisive mandate in the April 9 Assembly election, the results of which were announced on May 4. The IUML, the second-largest constituent in the UDF, is considered a key force within the alliance.
Leaders reportedly expressed that Congress’s indecision had dented the UDF’s public image and weakened the alliance’s momentum following its sweeping electoral victory.
