Many winners of the online honors turned the ceremony’s tradition of five-word speeches into upbeat or inspiring bits.
“I am just getting started,” uber producer Shonda Rhimes said after winning Streaming Person of the Year.
“A free press is essential,” said journalist Don Lemon, who won the Webby Award and People’s Voice Award for Best Video Podcast Host.
At least one recipient melded politics and humor. “Formerly undocumented immigrant. Current winner,” Atsuko Okatsuka said for the best comedy category.
