Police in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur registered an FIR on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) in connection with a viral video in which people at a wedding function could be seen wielding guns and firing.

Social media reels – that featured celebratory firing by family members of BJP worker Monika Singh with the Dhurandar track playing in the background – sparked a row over law and order in the State. The function was held in Mahadev Ghat.

The video sparked outrage online and a backlash from the Opposition, the local DD Nagar Police then registered an FIR.

“On Tuesday a video went viral on social media showing people firing in the air during a wedding function at Mahadev Ghat, Raipur. Deepak Singh and other individuals were seen deliberately firing from a licensed rifle in a highly crowded location. This amounts to negligence and a violation of the conditions of the firearm license,” said a press statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Sandeep Patel. The individual named in the FIR could also be seen firing and is related to the BJP worker, said a police officer.

“Prima facie, this constitutes an offence under Section 125 [acts that endanger human life or personal safety] and Section 3(5) [Common intention] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), [2023] and Section 30 of the Arms Act, [1959]. Accordingly, an FIR has been registered against Deepak Singh and others at the DD Nagar Police Station, and the matter has been taken up for investigation,” the statement further added.
