May 13 (UPI) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs fired coach Craig Berube after two seasons, including a 32-36-14 campaign in 2025-26, they announced Wednesday.

Berube led the Maple Leafs to a 52-26-4 mark in his first season, which ended with a second-round series loss to the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

The 2025-26 Maple Leafs, who allowed the second-most goals in the NHL, failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16.

"Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person," Toronto general manager John Chayka said. "This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig.
