Mike Johnson Hints At Senate Dropping Ballroom From ICE Funding BillHouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) suggested Senate Republicans might drop a controversial proposal to provide $1 billion for President Donald Trump's ballroom. Johnson noted the Senate bill is still in "draft form" and still needs to go through several layers of review. "We don't know what the final bill's going to be that we get," Johnson said Wednesday at a press conference. "We're not going to prejudge that product. We're waiting for it to come from the Senate."Senate Republicans don't seem so thrilled about the White House request for $1 billion, which is at least partly a response to a court blocking construction because Congress hasn't authorized the ballroom project. Johnson insisted the proposal is mostly for Secret Service security upgrades, even though the legislation specifies it's for security related to the East Wing Modernization Project. Senate Republicans said only 20% of the project would be for the ballroom. Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) said House members expect the ballroom funding to die in the Senate. "People are choosing their words carefully, but most of us are under that assumption that this initiative is going to die, because a lot of folks think that $200 million towards the ballroom at a time where Americans were paying $4.50 for gas, those two things don't mix," LaLota told HuffPost.
